What kind of techniques/tools do you use to present a Big Question?
My favorite teachers, when I was growing up, used to introduce topics in an anecdotal dialog. They'd talk about their own experiences, and ask students to talk about theirs. I try to do that when I run SOLEs. For example, in my next SOLE I'm planning to ask "Why does caffeine keep you awake?" First, I'll talk about my coffee habit when I was younger, how it got worse when I had to stay up late cramming for exams in college, and how I feel now I drink much less. I'll ask the students what effect caffeine has on them. We'll chat for 5 minutes or so. Then I'll ask the question.
